Why so many kids can’t sit still in school today

Parents and teachers may find this very disturbing.  Why have the education system, medical experts and parents not rallied on behalf of our most precious resource, our children? Why do we continue to disregard the full extent of their physical needs, when it is common knowledge that we need to address the whole child? Unfortunately, a two minute brain break isn't going to solve this development, nor will yoga balls.

When compared to children from the early 1980s, only one out of twelve children had normal strength and balance. Only one!Oh my goodness, I thought to myself. These children need to move!

Ironically, many children are walking around with an underdeveloped vestibular (balance) system today–due to restricted movement. In order to develop a strong balance system, children need to move their body in all directions, for hours at a time. Just like with exercising, they need to do this more than just once-a-week in order to reap the benefits. Therefore, having soccer practice once or twice a week is likely not enough movement for the child to develop a strong sensory system. To read more, click here.

Having children sit still for hours on end is abuse in my opinion. I take care of children birth to pre-k. They NEVER STOP moving. They come out moving because, they have been in the womb moving. ALL bodies need to move. That is their purpose. The brain does not function appropriately if the body doesn't exercise. I know there are examples of paraplegic whose brains function probably better than my own, but that is not from choice. A healthy child needs to learn to sit still and be patient. Yes! But, this is talking about a school day, which is day after day after day. I loved the open spaced school I attended. We could get up and move anytime we required. We had spce. Some of the stations had us challenge our physical abilities to help teach us about strength, conditioning, gravity, flexibility, etc. We need to find a good, healthy balance. Children are not even allowed to go outside to play for fear has captured our nation. This is a sad state of affairs!
